Technology Innovation Driving Growth: Promos Technology Breakthrough in NAND Flash
Recently, Taiwan's semiconductor storage technology pioneer -- Promos Technology Co., Ltd. (Smart Micro Technology) announced a major technological breakthrough in the field of NAND Flash controller chips and successfully launched a new generation of PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD master control scheme PMT8023 series with high reliability and low power consumption. The program has been certified by a number of international first-line storage module manufacturers and has entered the mass production phase, marking Promos's entry into the world's leading echelon in the field of autonomous controllable storage control technology.
Promos Technology has long focused on the development and design of NAND Flash controllers, solid state drives (SSD) master control chips and embedded storage solutions. With its deep technical accumulation and deep understanding of NAND flash characteristics, the company continues to optimize error correction algorithms (LDPC + RAID), wear leveling (Wear Leveling) and garbage collection (GC) mechanisms. The newly released PMT8023 master adopts 12nm advanced process, supports TLC/QLC NAND, has sequential read and write speed as high as 7,400/6,800 MB/s, random IOPS as high as 1,000K, reduces average power consumption by 23%, and significantly improves endurance and heat dissipation performance of terminal equipment.
worth noting that Promos's breakthrough is not only reflected in performance parameters, but also in its full-stack self-developed firmware architecture-FusionFirmware™. The architecture supports dynamic temperature-aware scheduling, AI-assisted bad block prediction and enterprise-level end-to-end data path protection (E2E Data Protection), and has been tested and verified in harsh scenarios such as industrial automation, in-vehicle infotainment systems (IVI) and edge AI servers. The company revealed that the PMT8023 platform-based vehicle-level SSD solution has been certified by ISO/IEC 17025 and is jointly developing with a number of Tier-1 automotive electronics suppliers.
Against the backdrop of increasing concentration in the global storage controller market, Promos Technology adheres to a differentiated competitive strategy, focusing on the mid-to-high-end embedded and professional application markets. According to the 2023 financial report, its NAND controller shipments increased by 31% year-on-year, with the industrial and automotive sector accounting for 42% of revenue for the first time. Dr. Lin Zhiyuan, CEO of the company, said: "We do not pursue the largest scale, but are committed to becoming the most trusted storage intelligent partner for customers-enabling the next generation of data-intensive applications with verifiable reliability, scalable firmware ecology and landing customization capabilities. '
At present, Promos Technology has set up joint laboratories in Suzhou, Shanghai and San Jose of the United States to accelerate the pre-research work of PCIe Gen5 and CXL compatible master control. It plans to release the next generation architecture PMT9000 series supporting Zoned Namespaces(ZNS) and Key-Value interface in the second half of 2024 to further expand the application scenarios in AI training cache and real-time database storage.
